Abstract

Compositions comprise polyvinyl chloride or post-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride and 1 to 25% by weight of the total solids of a basic nitrogenous polycondensate of epichlorhydrin and an amine. The epichlorhydrin may be condensed with amines, amines and diamines, amines and imines, diamines and alkyl halides, amines and di-secondary amines, or di-secondary amines. Preferred condensates are those of epichlorhydrin with octadecylamine and piperazine or hexamethylene diamine. The compositions may be dissolved in solvents, e.g. cyclohexanone, tetrahydrofuran, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide, N-methyl pyrrolidone, 2-pyrrolidone, chlorobenzene, nitromethane-trichlorethylene mixtures and ketone-nitrohydrocarbon-halohydrocarbon mixtures, to provide solutions from which fibres may be spun. The fibres may be stretched and the polycondensates rendered water-insoluble before or after stretching by reacting with formaldehyde, diisocyanates, diepoxy compounds, divinyl benzene or vinyl acetylene. The fibres may be dyed. In Example 1 fibres containing a condensate of epichlorhydrin, octadecylamine and piperazine are treated with the diglycidyl ether of ethylene glycol before dyeing.
