Abstract

A composition for the preparation of shaped articles comprises an acrylonitrile homo- or copolymer with from 1 to 20% by weight thereof of a basic nitrogen-containing resinous condensation product, alkylated or not, soluble in spinning solvents for the acrylonitrile polymer and obtained by the reaction of 1,2-dichloroethane with a polyfunctional amine, e.g. hexamethylene diamine. Polymers specified are polyacrylonitrile and an acrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate copolymer. The compositions may be made by dissolving the acrylonitrile polymer and the condensation product together in the same solvent, e.g. dimethyl formamide, butyrolactone and ethylene carbonate, from which solutions dyeable films and fibres may be prepared which may be treated with an isocyanate, formaldehyde or a diepoxy compound to water-insolubilize the nitrogen resin. The preparation of a nitrogen-containing resinous condensation product is described by heating hexamethylene diamine and 1,2-dichloroethane in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and, if, it is desired to alkylate the product, adding lauryl chloride to the resulting reaction mixture and continuing the heating.
