A rotary refining vessel has a magnesite or dolomite lining to which is applied by flame spraying a layer of graphite covered by a layer of one or more high temperature resistant oxides. The oxides may be zirconia, beryllia or thoria. The face of the carbon layer nearest to the shell of the vessel may also be provided with an oxide coating layer.
