Abstract

956,929. Friction clutches. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. Oct. 18, 1962 [Nov. 21, 1961], No. 39430/62. Headings F2C and F2L. A friction clutch comprises self-engaging shoes 67 which are initially moved into contact with the interior surface of a rotating pulley drum 61 by an auxiliary clutch 73, 76 controlled by a cable 80 and bell-crank lever 83 pivoted at 86, overspeeding of the clutch upon removal of the load from the driven shaft 50 resulting in automatic release of the shoes 67 by centrifugal weights 68 if the auxiliary clutch is inoperative. The disc 73 is carried by the drum 61 and its engagement with the member 76 by a trunnion disc 91 causes rotation of a plate 75 on a boss 75a free on the shaft 50, the plate having slots 78 engaged by pins 79 on the shoes 65 which are carried by pivot-pins 66 on a hub 63 keyed to the shaft 50. The position of the pin 66 on each shoe is such that the rotation of plate 75 causes self-engagement of the shoe with drum 61 against the action of a radial spring 70. Specification 941,970 is referred to.
