[Also in Division B5] In a die-casting or moulding machine an elongated member 22 moves with the movable die platen 11 and carries a number of spacedapart locking elements 23 which are movable to project from the member 22 and be engageable with a part of the machine not movable with the platen 11 if the latter inadvertently tends to move towards the fixed platen 10 so as to prevent such movement. In operation, with the dies open a movable die guard 32 is moved into position covering the dies, an abutment 35 actuating an air valve 36 to supply pressure air to a cylinder 29, raising a member 27 to lift the locking members 23 to the inoperative position, thus allowing the dies to close upon actuation of a valve 21 by the operator. After casting, initial displacement of the guard 32 releases the valve 36 and the member 27 falls to its lower position, allowing the guard 32 to be completely opened. A member 34 engages the member 27 in its uppermost position. The valve 21 is then actuated to open the dies and as the elongated member 22 moves rearwardly with the platen 11 the locking members 23 are successively moved to the operative position by a cam surface 31. If at any time during opening of the dies, removal of the casting &c. a fault develops in the hydraulic system or the valve 21 is accidentally operated, a closing movement of the platen 11 causes one of the members 23 to engage a lever 24, thus actuating a valve 25 to cut off the supply of pressure fluid to the die-closing piston 17.
