A discharge mechanism for a gooseneck die-casting machine comprises a discharge plunger 10 actuated by a fluid-actuated piston 12, a control valve 17 which includes an adjustable restricted by-pass 22 for controlling the fluid actuating said piston, a further piston 20 for opening the valve, a pilot valve 32 for controlling the fluid actuating the piston 20, and a cam 36 for actuating the pilot valve, said cam being connected to the discharge plunger 10 and arranged such that the cam actuates the pilot valve 32 for opening the control valve 17 to permit unrestricted flow of fluid therethrough after the discharge plunger has made a slow, initial movement in the discharge direction.
