Abstract

Hard, lustrous, substantially impermeable, vitreous, chemically resistant carbon bodies containing a maximum of 3% hydrogen are prepared by the carbonisation of a phenol-aldehyde resin body in vacuo or an inert or reducing atmosphere, e.g. argon, hydrogen, or carbon monoxide, in such a manner that the transition of the polymer to carbon takes place without disruption or distortion of the original form of the body, although a regular volume reduction takes place. Alternative heating cycles are given as: (1) an increase of 5 DEG C/hour until 600 DEG C., then 10 DEG C/hour to 825 DEG C., then 20 DEG C/hour until at least 1400 DEG C., which is then maintained for 24 hours followed by cooling at 20 DEG C/hour; (2) an increase of 1 DEG C/hour up to 500 DEG C., then 5 DEG C/hour to 900 DEG C.; cool naturally to room temperature and then reheat in vacuo or an inert or reducing atmosphere at 20 DEG C/hour to at least 1600 DEG C., and then allow to cool. Maximum temperatures from 600 DEG C. to above 3000 DEG C. are, in fact, quoted. The resins may be condensation products of phenol, cresols or xylenols and formaldehyde or furfural with or without catalysts e.g. sodium hydroxide, particularly resols or novolaks. Liquid resins may be treated directly in fused quartz moulds or the resin can be first cured in a mould at low temperature e.g. 90 DEG C. and the resin either powdered and hot pressed e.g. at 150 DEG to 200 DEG C. at 5 tons/square inch into shape or heated further e.g. to 200 DEG C. in the mould to give a moulded shape. In either case the resulting shaped resin body is carbonised in graphite powder.
