A platen press fed intermittently with paper or cardboard blanks by gripper-bars 13 driven by chains 14 has protective-elements 16 arranged to co-operate with the bars so as to prevent damage to the tool 10 should the press be accidently closed during the passage of the bars. Instead of the protective-elements 16 being disposed on the bars 13 as shown, they may be either attached to or form part of the tool frame 9 or fitted to the platen 1.
