Abstract
955,930. Wire wound resistors. NORTHERN ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 18, 1962 [Feb. 12, 1962], No. 39525/62. Heading H1S. A wire wound resistor is made by winding on a cylindrical former of insulating material insulated wire in a length in excess of that required to establish the desired resistance, attaching one end of the wire to one of the terminals, continuously stripping the insulation from the other end of the wire while continuously measuring the resistance of the wound wire up to the point at which the wire insulation has been removed, terminating the insulation stripping when the resistance attains the required value, and attaching the stripped wire to the second terminal. Fig. 2 shows the preferred embodiment of apparatus for performing the invention in which the resistor is held between chucks 18 and 19, the terminal leads being accommodated in slots 20 and 21. One end of the winding is stripped of insulation and attached to terminal portion 12 Of the former, e.g. by welding with electrodes 38 and 39, thus connecting one end of the resistor to terminal 35b of the Wheatstone bridge network 32. The other end of the resistance winding is passed through loop 28 of the heating wire 27 and over contact member 30, the heating wire stripping the insulation off the resistance wire 16 thus allowing the contact member to complete the circuit connecting the resistance winding in the bridge network 32. The wire is thus pulled through the stripping device until the bridge indicates the desired resistance when the stripping is stopped and the stripped portion welded to terminal 11 by the electrodes 38 and 39.
