Abstract

955,877. Lanterns for street lighting. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 10, 1962 [Aug. 21, 1961], No. 30096/61. Heading F4R. A source of illumination, especially for street lighting, comprises a lantern incorporating at least one sodium vapour discharge lamp and at least one fluorescent electric discharge lamp producing a blue-green radiation complementary to the radiation from the sodium vapour lamp, all the lamps being disposed and light-reflecting surfaces, if used, being arranged within the lantern to produce a comopsite radiation of uniform colour. The auxiliary lamp may use a phosphor of strontium halophosphate activated with antimony. In one arrangement, the sodium lamp is mounted with its axis vertical and a helical tubular fluorescent lamp arranged around it. In another arrangement, the sodium lamp 2 is again vertical and fluorescent lamps 3 are arranged in an equilateral triangle around it. Alternatively, circular fluorescent lamps concentric with and in planes normal to the axis of the sodium lamp may be used. The sodium lamp may be placed with its axis horizontal and the fluorescent lamps spaced around it. The lantern may have a circular or polygonal translucent window 4 closed at the top by an opaque cover 6 and mounted on a cup-shaped part 5 on top of a post. Specification 923,961 is referred to.
