Abstract

955,308. Hydrocyclones. BAUER BROS. CO. Feb. 6. 1963 [Feb. 14, 1962], No 4834/63. Heading B2P. In a hydrocyclone for purifying paper-making slurry and having overflow and underflow ends, a tangential inlet 15 at the overflow end and a coaxial vortex finder 16 with its inner extremity located below the longitudinal axis of the inlet 15, a body portion 25 is arranged on the vortex finder 16 intermediate its inner extremity and an axial plane through the longitudinal axis of the inlet 15 and provides a surface 26 to intercept longitudinally circulating currents 28 of low radial velocity formed in the slurry externally of the vortex finder. The surface 26 is formed with an annular groove 27 of semicircular cross-section to deflect these currents into the main flow of slurry and prevent their passage directly into the vortex finder with the purified fraction. The portion 25, having the shape of a truncated cone, is formed on a closure body 17 having a helical surface 24 which guides the incoming slurry downwardly. The vortex finder is provided at its extremity with a bell-shaped sleeve 18 which also serves to deflect outwardly the currents 28 into the main flow slurry. The sleeve 18 and the body 17 may be secured to, or made integral with, the vortex finder. The underflow end of the hydrocyclone may be submerged in a liquid bath.
