Abstract
Basic dehydrated lead carbonate having the formula PbCO3.PbO, a CO2 content of about 9% and a loss on ignition of about 9%, is prepared by the controlled thermal decomposition at 200-320 DEG C. of dried basic lead carbonate having a CO2 content of 9-16%, e.g. commercial white lead or mixtures thereof with anhydrous lead carbonate. A basic lead carbonate having the formula PbCO3.Pb(OH)2 may be prepared by introducing carbon dioxide into a lead oxide suspension in water and acetic acid or soluble acetate until 9-16% is absorbed, the resulting mass being filtered, dried and thermally decomposed as above. Examples disclose the decomposition times of 9 hours at 200 DEG C., 5-6 hours at 200-230 DEG C. and 15 mins. at 300 DEG C.ALSO:Dehydrated basic lead carbonate having the formula PbCO3.PbO may be used as a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride or its copolymers or other high-polymeric chlorinated hydrocarbons.ALSO:A pigmentary, basic, dehydrated lead carbonate PbCO3.PbO having a CO2 content of about 9% and a loss on ignition of about 9% is prepared by the thermal decomposition at 200-320 DEG C. of dried basic lead carbonate having a CO2 content of 9-16% e.g. commercial white lead or mixtures thereof with anhydrous lead carbonate. Example 5 describes the pigment being incorporated into a paint by mixing with linseed oil varnish and white spirit.
