Abstract
A calcined kaolin of high whiteness value is obtd. by calcining kaolin in the presence of HCl at 900-1200 degrees C (1050-1100 degrees C). The kaolin is mixed before calcining with liq. HCl or a chlorinated solid which releases gaseous HCl during calcination, e.g. an alkali(ne earth)chloride. The HCl is used in amt. 1-2 wt % of the wt. of dry kaolin being treated. The mixt. is pref. submitted to a sharp thermal shock to heat it rapidly to the calcination temp. and after treatment is cooled similarly. The kaolin is used as pigments in rubber, elastomers plastics and paints. The HCl removes ferric oxide normally occurring in the kaolin, by reaction forming volatile ferric chloride and moisture. The thermal shock causes the gas to be evolved rapidly at the calcination temp. The rapid heating minimises the dissociation of HCl.
