Abstract

Cation-exchange resins containing carboxyl groups are prepared by the oxidation of the halogenalkyl groups of a haloalkylated copolymer of an aromatic hydrocarbon containing at least one vinyl group and a cross-linking agent containing at least two vinyl groups. Oxidizing agents specified are conc. nitric acid\sBan alkali metal nitrate; chromesulphuric acid; hydrogen peroxide; a chromate, bichromate or nitrate in water, sulphuric acid, nitric acid or an alkali; or a mixture of a s. amine+sulphur (e.g. morpholine +sulphur) with subsequent hydrolysis of the acid amide formed. The examples illustrate the oxidation of a chloromethylated styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer.
