Abstract

954,338. Ignition systems. BENDIX CORPORATION. Aug. 20, 1962 [Sept. 7, 1961], No. 31942/62. Addition to 950,809. Heading F1B. In an ignition system comprising a magneto 10 having a winding 11, breaker contacts 26 connected across the winding, at least one set of electrodes 25 constituting a discharge gap connected to the winding to be energized thereby and a saturable core reactor, there are provided a circuit including the saturable core reactor 40, a rectifier 42 and a battery 34 to be charged through the rectifier in series therein, means adapted to selectively connect the circuit across the winding in parallel with the breaker contacts and to disconnect it therefrom and further means adapted to selectively connect the battery to the winding of the magneto so as to increase the current flow therein. In the position C of the switches shown in the drawing the ignition system is in the off condition. In the central position A of the switches the ignition circuit is in its on condition and a battery 34 is charged by the excess current produced by the magneto. In the position B of the switches the battery 34 is connected to the winding 11 of the magneto so as to boost the magnetic field in the magneto coil.
