[Also in Division B7] To prevent movement of a vehicle along a transporter vehicle 1, Fig. 2, two pairs of members 10, 11 are urged away from each other against the wheels 20a, 20b of the vehicle. The vehicle is moved on to a rail-truck 1 and astride a locking unit 2 which is moved on wheels 3 by a ram 4 until it is approximately mid-way between the axles of the vehicle. Rams 5 are next expanded to move shafts 8 on which are mounted plates 10, 11 towards the wheels. The plates 10 are rotatably mounted, and plates 11 are fixed to the shafts 8. Consequently, when the plates 10 abut the wheels the shafts 8 are rotated by arms 7 to raise plates 11 to the position shown in association with wheel 20a. Several sets of locking members may be provided on a truck and if necessary adjacent ends of two sets of locking members may co-operate to secure a wheel. In a second embodiment, Fig. 8, longitudinal frame members 31, 31a of a rail truck are connected by spaced parallel transverse members 32. Between each pair of members 32 is mounted for vertical movement a pair of locking members 33, sufficiently close together that several are located within a distance equal to the diameter of a vehicle wheel. With the members 33 in the down position one or more vehicles are driven on to the truck. Hydraulic rams 41 are now expanded to raise the members 33 through links 39, 36. All the members 33 not restrained by vehicle wheels are thus raised and held in position by ratchet and pawl mechanism 44, 45. In addition the links 36 pass through their tow-dead-centre positions and an hydraulic lock is provided in the rams, thus the system always fails safe. The outer ends of members 33 are raised higher than their inner ends to provide greater stability for heavier wider-tracked vehicles. To lower the locking members the ratchet bars 44 are raised and released by cams 46 on shafts 47 and therams 41 are contracted. The locking members may be restricted to zones which coincide with the wheels of vehicles to be carried. In both the embodiments electrical, mechanical, pneumatic or vacuum operating means may be used. Specification 954,289 is referred to.
