Abstract
Gelatin is dyed by reacting it with a water-soluble reactive dye selected from (a) dyes containing a residue, esterified with sulphuric acid, of a b -hydroxyethylsulphone, (b) dyes containing a trichloropyrimidine or dichloropyrimidine residue, (c) dyes containing a residue, esterified with sulphuric acid, of a b -hydroxyethyl-sulphonamide or b -hydroxyethyl-g -methylamino-propyl sulphonamide, (d) dyes containing the residue of a lower halogenalkyl-carboxylic acid such as chloroacetic, b -chloropropionic or a , b -dichloro-propionic acid, (e) dyes containing the residue of an a :b -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, for example acrylic, a -chloroacrylic or a :b :b -trichloroacrylic acid, (f) dyes containing a halogenotriazine nucleus, e.g. a monochlorotriazine residue, (g) dyes containing the residue of a dichloropyrimidine sulphonic or carboxylic acid, (h) dyes containing a pyrimidine residue bound in position 2 or 6 to the remainder of the dye molecule and containing in the other of these two positions a chlorine atom and in position 5 a negative substituent such as a nitro group, a nitrile group or a sulphonic acid group, (i) dyes containing a trichloropyridazine residue, (k) dyes containing epoxide rings or atomic groupings capable of forming such rings and (l) copper phthalocyanines. The reaction is stated to result in the formation of a chermical, covalent bond between the dye and the gelatin.
