Abstract

953,420. Periscopes. BARR & STROUD Ltd. July 27,1956 [Nov. 1,1955], No. 31267/55. Heading G2J. In a periscope having telescope system within the casing 3, a lens 4 of the telescope is mounted in a stiff tubular carrier 8 which is located by supports 10 in the fixed part of the periscope casing, and by supports 9 in the bent part of the casing, whereby the movement of lens 4 can be controlled in order to compensate for the tendency of the image to move due to bending of the periscope. The supports 9 may be at different distances along the tube 8 in the fore-and-aft, and athwartships directions to vary the compensation provided in the two directions of bending. A number of modifications of the position of the lens or lenses and the supports are described Figs. 2-12 (not shown). In Fig. 7 (not shown) a saucer-shaped-disc 13 on the tube 8 engages feet 12 on a pivoted-prism mounting to cause the prism to tilt.
