Abstract

953,167. Ultrasonic wave couplings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 23, 1960 [May 22, 1959], No. 17582/59. Heading H4J. The space between the coupling blocks 11, 12 carrying the piezo-electric transmitter 16 and receiver 17 of an ultrasonic testing probe is filled with material 18 which, in the region adjacent the coupling block surface, has a characteristic impedance higher than the characteristio impedance of the blocks. The high characteristic impedance of the filling avoids a change of phase of # on reflection at the side face. The coupling blocks are of polymethyl methacrylate resin and may be joined by an integral web 13. The filling is a polyester resin or an epoxy resin loaded with heavy particles of tungsten powder or chopped tungsten wire. The filling may include fibrous material to increase absorption. A thin layer of tungsten may be cemented to each face of the filling so that the coupling blocks are in direct contact with tungsten. The piezo-electric elements 16, 18 may comprise stacks of crystals operable over a range of frequencies as described in Specification 841,512. The piezo-electric elements 16, 18 carry damping backings 22 and are screened by an electrostatic shield 23. Layers 21 of the filling material 18 may be applied to the outside faces of the blocks. It is desirable that the thickness of the filling 18 between the blocks should be greater than 4/3# and the thickness of the web 13 should be less than or equal to 2/3# where # is the longest wavelength used.
