Abstract

749,930. Sound transmitting and receiving devices. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 1, 1954 [March 31, 1953], No. 5964/54. Class 40 (4). In a transducer primarily intended for underwater use, an array of radially - responsive annular transducing elements having their outer surfaces acoustically decoupled from each other are located in a recess in a sound transmitting member forming the front wall of a container, the depth of the recess being equal to the thickness of the transducing elements. As shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the array of annular, radially - responsive trans-. ducing elements 10 are located in an enclosure between a solid vibrationreflecting wall 20 and a recessed soundtransmitting member 14, the outer surface of each element being acoustically insulated by a ring 44 of sound absorptive material while the elements are positioned in individual pockets which are formed in the recessed member by integral bosses 17. The elements may be formed from an annular ceramic dielectric which comprises barium titanate and utilizes inner and outer electrodes consisting of fused silver films, the electrodes being connected in parallel to a screened lead 30 by bus-bars 35-38 arranged in slots 40 in the member 14. An outer member 22 of hard rubber is secured to the member 14 by screws 27 which engage peripherally-embedded metal reinforcement 25, 26, a waterproofing compound being interposed. A layer of soundabsorptive material 23 is located between the member 22 and the wall 20, this layer and the rings 44 being formed of soft air cell rubber or corprene. The sound-transmitting member 14 is formed of rubber composition which has an acoustic impedance matching the medium, e.g. water, in which the transducer is to operate. A matching choke 43 located in a cavity 48 is connected in series with the elements and the free space within the transducer is filled with a sound propagating medium such as castor oil through a closable aperture 46. Alternatively only the pockets in the member 14 are filled before assembly, the oil being then restricted to this region by suitable sealing. Specifications 583,639 and 601,477, [both in Group V], are referred to.
