Abstract

1,121,523. Ultrasonic probes. LENINGRADSKY FILIAL VSESOJUZNOGO NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKOGO INSTITUTA ELEKTROMEKHANIKI. 23 July, 1965, No. 12180/65. Heading H4J. An ultrasonic probe comprises a damping cover block 1, an active element 2 (e.g. a piezoelectric or magnetostrictive element) and, optionally, one or more intermediate layers 3, 4. Ultrasonic vibrations are sent by element 2 into, or received from, a medium 6 to be tested through a liquid contact layer 5. The thickness and material of the element 2 and the materials of the block 1 and of the contact layer 5 (and the thickness and materials of the intermediate layers 3, 4, if present) are such that the coefficient of reflection at the boundary between the element 2 (or, if present the outer surface of the lower layer 4) and the contact layer 5 is substantially zero. Multiple reflections in the contact layer 5 are substantially eliminated and in consequence the sensitivity of the transducer is substantially independent of the finish of the test surface. With an element 2 having a high electromechanical coupling coefficient, e.g. barium titanate, the parameters of the associated electrical circuitry are taken into account. This is unnecessary with material, e.g. quartz, having a low electromechanical coupling coefficient, not greater than about 0.001. Layers 3 and 4 may be of epoxy resin and steel respectively. The members 1 to 5 are held in a metal casing.(7), Fig. 2 (not shown), furnished with a lead (8) for connecting the element 2 to a circuit supplied from a high frequency generator, or to a circuit for extracting electrical signals from the transducer when it receives back ultrasonic waves.
