Abstract

1,131,442. Electro-mechanical delay lines. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. 2 May, 1966 [3 May, 1965], No. 19324/66. Heading H3U. A dispersive acoustic delay line for compressing pulses frequency-modulated on a carrier wave comprises a box-like waveguide 4 divided by a very thin impermeable diaphragm 7 into a first lower cavity 1 and an upper superimposed second cavity 2. Each cavity is filled with a fluid, the fluid of the first cavity 1 having a higher phase velocity for acoustic waves propagated therein than the fluid of the second cavity 2. For example, the fluid of cavity 1 may be air and cavity 2 may contain sulphur hexafluoride; alternatively, cavity 1 may contain helium and cavity 2 may contain sulphur hexafluoride, carbon dioxide, or air. Electromagnetic transducers 10, 11 coupled to the fluid in the cavity 2 act, respectively, as a transmitter and receiver, the acoustic compressional wave being transmitted through the two fluids. The Specification sets out the underlying theory. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the waveguide is in the form of a spiral.
