Abstract

952,933. Protective helmets. HELMETS Ltd., and L. R. NOBLETT. Oct. 24, 1962 [July 26, 1961], No. 19104/61. Heading A3V. A protective helmet designed to prevent flow of air into the shell when the wearer is subjected to a high speed air blast comprises a rigid (e.g. glass fibre) one-piece shell (Fig. 1) having interior shock absorbing means in the form of cork lining elements 2 and a head-engaging nylon strap harness 3, and having adhesively secured to the periphery of the shell a flexible band 5 (e.g. leather) about one inch wide, provided with a hem by stitching 6 and notched at frequent intervals to form a series of spaced loops 8 which form complementary attachment means for the sealing member. The sealing member comprises a flexible band 9 having three sections 11, 12 and 13 which are sewn together to conform with the shape of the periphery of the helmet. Band 9 on its outer edge has uniformly spaced U-shaped notches and the parts of the band between the notches are folded inwardly and secured by stitching 15, thus forming loops 16 (about half the number provided on band 5). Band 9 is interlocked with band 5 (Fig. 3) and a nylon lacing cord 17 is passed through the aligned loops, the ends of the cord being secured at the rear of the helmet. Where the helmet periphery undergoes a sharp bend two or more successive loops 8 are left unthreaded. The helmet may have lining elements attached to the inner edge of the sealing means and sliding clasp fasteners or moulded interlocking means may be used to mount the sealing band on the helmet.
