Abstract

An explosive composition comprises an inorganic oxidizing salt or a peroxide which is capable of liberating oxygen upon detonation dissolved in aqueous ammonia or liquid anhydrous ammonia and a thermal carrier which may be magnesium or aluminium or alloys thereof, zinc, calcium, lithium, sodium, strontium, barium, rare earth metals, iron, tin, lead, titanium, carbon, sulphur, selenium, or phosphorus. The salts may be nitrates, nitrites, perchlorates, sulphates, chlorates or chromates especially those of ammonium. The preferred thermal carriers are magnesium and aluminium alloys which may contain about 1% of manganese. These carriers may be in the form of shavings, chips, chopped scraps, machinings, band saw shavings, millings, foils, strands, needles, bars, sponges, tubes or wools. The metal should all be retained on a 0.8 mm. linear mesh. The thermal carrier may be employed in an amount of 4 to 60% based on the weight of the total composition. The composition may be poured directly into a borehole or loaded into a polyethylene bag.
