Abstract
952,800. Producing vacua. G. L. WAX. Feb. 1, 1962 [Feb. 6, 1961; July 15, 1961 (2)], No. 3864/62. Heading F1N. [Also in Division F4] A method of partially evacuating the space 20 between the walls 12, 14 of a double walled container 10 in which slugs 24 of ceramic material are adhered to wall 12 above apertures 22, the slugs having a melting point below that of the ceramic material of which the container is made. The container, as shown in Fig. 4 is placed in an oven and the temperature raised from 700‹-1250‹C. As the temperature rises, air within space 20 expands and escapes through apertures 22 until the melting point of the slugs is reached, and at this temperature the slugs flow downwards over the apertures 22 thereby sealing them. The container 10 is then gradually cooled, and as the space 20 is at a lower pressure than atmosphere the latter presses against the slugs and forces them further into the apertures 22 thereby effecting a permanent seal. The apertures 22 are always positioned in wall 12 so that the heated air rises to pass through them. The wall 12 is provided with strength imparting vertical ridges (Fig. 1 not shown).
