Abstract

1361538 Heat-shrinking closures HOUILLERES DU BASSIN DU NORD ET DU PASDE-CALAIS 27 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 19685/72 Heading B8T [Also in Division B5] A closure for a container has a planar part 19 with a central zone 21 having a smaller heatshrinkability than that f of the peripheral zone 22, and a skirt 20 with a tangential shrinkability f<SP>1</SP> larger than its radial shrinkability f, so that when it is heat shrunk on to the container, it tightly grips around the mouth of the container without causing excessive tension in the central region 19. The closure is made from a thermoplastic sheet 17, on an apparatus comprising male and female mould members, 5, 6 respectively. The male member 5 comprises suction vents 7, means for evacuating or pressurizing its interior, and a heated protuberance 11, similar in shape to the container mouth (the outline 1 of which is shown by perforated lines) but with smaller dimensions. The female member 6 has suction vents 7, cooling means and an insulating ring 15, and has dimensions larger than those of the container. The male member 5 is raised above the level of the sheet, and the interior of the member is evacuated. The sheet; above its vitreous transition temperature, is shaped by the heated protuberance 11, and the female member 6 is then lowered until the ring 15 engages the sheet 17. The space between the shaped sheet 17 and the interior wall of the female member is evacuated and pressure is applied inside the male member, distending the shaped sheet against the cooled female member where it hardens. The formed closure shape, which is punched out of the sheet and placed on the container is sealed thereto by placing in a heating tunnel or oven having upper elements which supply less heat than do the side elements, and the closure shrinks on to the container, tending to regain the shape of the protuberance 11.
