Abstract

952,456. Filters. A. J. A. ASPLUND. March 21, 1960 [March 23, 1959], No. 9853/60. Heading B1D. A continuously operable filtering apparatus, e.g. for the separation of fibrous material suspended in a liquid, comprises an interspace 69 into which the suspension is introduced through a pipe 78, between two drum-like press members 12 and 14 which rotate about horizontal or substantially horizontal axes in the same direction 34, the member 12 being disposed eccentrically within the member 14 so that the interspace 69 varies from a maximum width 36 to a minimum width 38 in the direction of rotation. The member 12 is mounted in bearings 20 and 21 so as to be movable horizontally by servomotors to vary the width 38. The filtrate passes through the perforate surfaces 84 and 104 through the passages 94, 96 and 120, 122, 124 respectively to a sump 100 and the cake is discharged by a screw 126. The horizontal movement and pressure applied by the servomotors, e.g. hydraulic motors, is controlled by a valve responsive to movement by each bearing 20 and 21 to ensure that even pressure is applied at the width 38 and that it remains constant along its axial length. A further embodiment describes a stationary semi-cylindrical slide housed in the central bore 122 of the member 12 and a series of radial tubes to remove liquid extending from the screen 104 to communicate by means of ducts with the bore 122 when they coincide with the interspace 69. The press members may have the form of superimposed double-cones.
