Abstract

952,298. Pipe couplings. BALDWIN-LIMAHAMILTON CORPORATION. Oct. 9, 1962, No. 38192/62. Heading F2G. [Also in Division F4] A heat exchanger (see Division F4) closure assembly comprises a tube sheet member 17 having a shoulder 40 at one end co-operating with a shoulder 15 of the shell member of the heat exchanger, a cover 19 for closing the other end of the member 17 and a pressure ring 18 received on the member 17, the members being maintained in fluid-tight relationship with one another by studs 20 which are connected between the ring 18 and the cover 19 and an end 14 on the shell member 4 and which are in compression between the ring and the shell member and in tension between the ring and the cover. The ends of tubes 2 are secured in a fluidtight manner such as by roller expanding tube ribs 24 into grooves 25 in the member 17. One of the fluids of the heat exchanger leaves or enters a plenum chamber 28 through a conduit 29 and circulates through the tubes 2. The other fluid enters or leaves the shell 4 through an inlet/outlet, not shown. The tube sheet member 17 is screw threaded at 34 and the ring 18 is screwed on it. The ring 18 has screw threaded holes for the studs 20 and the cover 19 has unthreaded holes 36 through which the studs 20 pass. A locknut 21 is threaded on each stud 20 and turned back to clear the end, and the stud is then turned till its end abuts the end 16 of the shell member 4. Thereafter nuts 22 are secured on the studs 20 to tighten the cover 19 against the end of the member 17, a gasket 37 being interposed. The jacknuts 21 are then screwed along the studs 20 and press on the end surface 16 until the shoulder 15, shown as conical in Fig. 4, bears against the shoulder 40 on the member 17. The angle of inclination of the outer conical shoulder 15 is preferably about 2 degrees steeper than that of the inner shoulder 40. In a modification, the jacknuts 21 are dispensed with and the studs 20 are turned, after tightening the nuts 22, flats being formed on their ends for the purpose. Another modification, Fig. 6, uses separate bolts 41 and studs 42. This construction requires a space between the ring 18 and the cover 19 for the bolt head 41 and a flange 45 projects from the cover 19 for this purpose. In a third modification the conical joint 15, 40 is replaced by square shoulders with a gasket between.
