A ventilator shaft top comprises superposed rings 2 with a concrete top 4 and concrete footing 5 each ring being a flat annular plate 7 with equally spaced radial flanges 8 having noses 10 engaging recesses 9 in an adjacent plate 7. The ratio of the height h and the radial width r of the flanges 8 is equal to or less than the tangent of the angle of repose of surrounding filter material 6, e.g. shingle, so that said material does not fall into and block the shaft. The rings are made of concrete or metal and may be segmental. They may also be of polygonal shape and the flanges are mounted alternately on opposite sides of the plate or on both sides vertically adjacent one another.
