Abstract

952,248. Control of A.C. motors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Jan. 30, 1963 [Jan. 30, 1962], No. 3550/62. Heading H2J. A fluid heater cleaner has a retractable lance driven by an induction motor 1 which is supplied from three phase generator 3 through reversing contacts 2a, 2b. If one phase of the supply is interrupted during forward movement of a lance, it is not possible to reverse the drive unless the star point of the motor is connected to the neutral point of the supply. For this purpose, a filter 12 is associated with current transformer 7 so that the frequency of the signal applied to the filter changes when a fault develops in one of the phases of the supply. A trigger 16 is then operated through amplifier 13 and filter 17, so causing trigger circuit 19 to de-energize relay coil 20. This causes contacts 5b to complete a circuit between the star point of the motor and the neutral point of the supply. Alarm contacts 22 are closed at the same time. Should a break occur in the lead 4a during normal operation, coil 27 is de-energized to close switch 28. The trigger circuit 19 then acts to de-energize the coil 20 and close the alarm contacts 22. Resistor 30 and capacitor 31 provide a delay in the operation of the trigger 19 to prevent a false alarm indication. Transient surges are suppressed by resistor 26 and capacitor 32 associated with coil 27. The motor 1 is one of several adapted for sequential operation. Specification 636,052 is referred to.
