Abstract

Lubricating oil base-stocks having a kinematic viscosity of at least 8.5 centistokes at 210 DEG F. and a viscosity index of at least 130 are obtained by contacting a microcrystalline wax with hydrogen at elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst comprising a platinum group metal, alumina and less than 1% wt. of halogen, and separating a product of the desired characteristics. The preferred catalyst is a reforming catalyst and suitable conditions are 600-950 DEG F., 100-2000 p.s.i.g., 0.01-10 v./v./hr. and 1000-15,000 S.C.F. of hydrogen per barrel of feed. The product is preferably fractionated to remove lower boiling materials and is dewaxed before and/or after such fractionation.
