Abstract

<PICT:1044202/C4-C5/1> Lubricating oil base stocks having a kinematic viscosity of at least 5 centistokes at 210 DEG F. and a viscosity index of at least 110 and falling within the area above and to the right of the line ABCD on the graph, Fig. 1, accompanying the Provisional Specification, are obtained by a process comprising contacting a feedstock which is either a slack wax containing not more than 40 weight per cent oil, or an oil containing 10-60 weight per cent wax and having a kinematic viscosity of at least 10 centistokes at 210 DEG F. and a viscosity index of at least 50, with a catalyst comprising a platinum group metal on a support which contains a major proportion of alumina and a minor proportion of an acidic component, at 650-850 DEG F. and 500-3000 p.s.i.g. in the presence of hydrogen, and fractionating and dewaxing the reactor products to isolate the above specified lubricating oil basestock. The space velocity is preferably 0.5-5 v./v./hr. and the gas rate 1000-10,000 SCFH2/B. The acidic component of the catalyst may be an oxide of Groups III-V of the Periodic Table, other than alumina, or a halogen.
