Abstract

Pharmaceutical compositions comprise 1-dehydro-6-alpha-methylhydrocortisone, a 21-acylate thereof wherein the acyl group is that of an organic carboxylic acid containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms inclusive, or a water-soluble salt of said acylates formed by polybasic carboxylic acids of 1 to 12 carbon atoms in which one carboxyl group is used in acylating the hydroxy group at the 21-position of the 1-dehydro-6-alpha-methyl analogue of hydrocortisone, a decongestant, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Specified decongestants are phenylephrine and its hydrochloride, theophylline or beta-(ortho-methoxy phenyl)-isopropyl methylamine hydrochloride. Specified water-soluble salts are the sodium, potassium, phenylephrine and N-methyl glucamine salts of the polybasic acid mono-esters. Specified pharmaceutical forms for enteral, parenteral and topical application are capsules, lozenges, pills, pilules, tablets, elixirs, solutions, syrups, sterile solutions and suspensions, dry sterile carriers, bougies, ointments, pastes, suppositories, inhalations, lotions, sprays and suspensions. Liquid topical forms may be pressurized. The compositions may contain disintegrators, lubricants, binders, flavours, sweetening agents, surfactants or preservatives, e.g. myristyl gamma-picolurium chloride. The composition may contain neomycin. Specification 853,981 is referred to.
