Abstract
Nicotinic acid N-oxide is prepared by heating with stirring nicotinic acid, acetic acid and perhydrol until no further gas is evolved. Its salts, e.g. the sodium and magnesium salts, may be prepared by salification with the corresponding base.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions having blood cholesterol lowering activity comprise a carrier and nicotinic acid N-oxide having the formula <FORM:0951732/A5-A6/1> or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, e.g. the sodium or magnesium salt. They may be in conventional forms suitable for oral, parenteral and rectal administration, e.g. a tablet, pill, powder, capsule, injectable solution or suppository.
