Abstract

951,690. Vehicle bumpers. PLASTMANT Ltd. May 11, 1962 [May 16, 1961], No. 17768/61. Heading B7J. A vehicle bumper comprises a pair of superimposed resilient leaves 13, 14, Figs. 3 and 4, made e.g. of synthetic resinous material, the leaf 13 having parallel ribs 20 for seating in parallel grooves 21 in the leaf 14, the latter having ribs 22 seating between parallel projections 24 on elongated portions of a pair of brackets (only the bracket 11 being shown) secured to the vehicle frame. The leaves are retained on the brackets by pins 16 on the leaf 13 passing through aligned holes in the leaf 14 and brackets, the pins 16 being retained by cross-pins 17. When the bumper receives an impact in the direction F, Fig. 9, the leaves flex from the positions shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and the projections ride in the grooves or over the projections 24 as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, so that some of the impact is absorbed by such flexing and by friction. When the impact force is removed the leaves return to their normal shapes. The leaves may be reinforced by transverse ribs between the ribs 20 and further ribs extending between the transverse ribs. In other embodiments only one leaf may coact with the brackets.
