Abstract

Polypropylene having a molecular weight between 50,000 and 1,060,000 and having an isotacity between 50 and 100% is prepared by polymerizing propylene in a pure aliphatic hydrocarbon or in fractions of aliphatic benzines using a catalyst comprising titanium trichloride or titanium trichloride/tetrachloride mixtures and an aluminium alkyl or alkyls, characterized in that (a) a partial pressure of hydrogen varying between 0 and approximately 2 atmospheres is imposed on the system, (b) the polymerization temperature varies between 40 DEG C. and approximately 100 DEG C., (c) titanium tetrachloride is added to titanium trichloride in amount between 0 and 100% and (d) the catalyst components are removed and a partial or complete extraction of the atactic polymer fraction is carried out at the appropriate temperature using the solvent that was used as the polymerization medium. The polymerization pressure is preferably 5 to 15 atmospheres. After the reaction mass has been filtered to remove part of the solid atactic polymer fraction, the reaction mass is placed in an autoclave and is purified by adding a fresh quantity of solvent containing alcohol or acetone. In the examples propylene is polymerized in an n-heptane fraction of extraction benzine using as catalyst TiCl3 or TiCl3/TiCl4 and (C2H5)3Al or (C2H5)2AlCl either in the presence or absence of hydrogen.
