Abstract

Titanium trichloride is made from triethyl aluminium and titanium trichloride in molar ratios 0.4 to 0.5\sS1 in inert hydrocarbon solvents by adding a AlEt3 solution having a concentration of 80 to 120 g./l. to a TiCl4 solution having a concentration of 200 to 300 g./l. at - 20 DEG to + 30 DEG C. and then heating to 145-155 DEG C. for 30 to 120 minutes. A large number of suitable hydrocarbon solvents is specified and if their boiling point is below 155 DEG C., the second stage of the reaction is carried out under pressure. The product may be recovered by centrifuging the suspension or by evaporating the solvent, and may be used either in suspension or as a solid in the polymerization of an ethylenic monomer (see Division C3).ALSO:A novel product (a), and its use is claimed as an a -olefin polymerizing catalyst component, is obtained as a reaction product from triethyl aluminium and titanium tetrachloride in molar ratios between 0.4:1 and 0.5:1, by adding an Al Et3 solution having a concentration of 80 to 120g/l to a TiCl4 solution of concentration 200 to 300g/l at -20 DEG to +30 DEG C., then heating to 145 DEG to 155 DEG C. for 30 to 120 mins. and optionally removing the votatile matter. Aliphatic a -olefins preferably propylene or butene-1, are polymerized with a catalyst comprising either the suspended or solid product above and 1 to 4 mols./mol. of TiCl3 of a C1 to C5 dialkyl aluminium monohalide. The solvents which may be employed are inert hydrocarbons which may be saturated aliphatics, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or arylaliphatics. The intrinsic viscosity and apparent density ranges of the polypropylene are different when the product (a) is used in suspension to prepare the catalyst, or when the dried product is used. The effect of varying catalyst concentration, polymerization temperature and pressure on the polymer are illustrated in the examples, in which product (a) is obtained by the use of AlEt3 containing small amounts of (Et)2Al OEt.
