Abstract

The production of the following compounds is described:-2,5-dimethoxy-N-methylacetanilide is obtained by reacting 2, 5-dimethoxyacetanilide with sodium in liquid ammonia followed by reaction with dimethyl sulphate. 2, 5-dihydroxy-monomethylaminobenzene is obtained by refluxing the above intermediate with hydrobromic acid. 2, 5-dimethoxy-diethylaniline is obtained by refluxing together ethyl phosphate and 2, 5-dimethoxyaniline. 2, 5-dihydroxy-diethylaminobenzene is obtained by refluxing the above intermediate with a mixture of acetic and hydrobromic acids. 2, 5-dimethoxy -(b -diethylaminoethyl)-amino-benzene is obtained by reacting the hydrochloride of N-b -diethylaminoethyl chloride and 2, 5-dimethoxyaniline in the presence of calcium carbonate in aqueous solution. 2, 5-dihydroxy -(b -diethylaminoethyl)-amino-benzene is obtained by refluxing the above intermediate with hydrobromic acid. The hydroxy compounds are used for dyeing human hair.ALSO:Live human hair, fur and other keratinous fibres are dyed by impregnating the said fibres with an aqueous solution of at least one compound of the formula <FORM:0951509/D1-D2/1> wherein R and R1 denote hydrogen, an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms or an alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms substituted by an amino or hydroxy group, at least one of the groups R and R1 being other than hydrogen and causing or allowing oxidation of the compound to take place on the fibres. The solution may have a pH of 3-9, preferably 7 and may further contain wetting agents, thickening agents, foaming agents and reducing agents such as sodium sulphite. The specified compounds are 2,5-dihydroxy-monomethylaminobenzene, 2,5-dihydroxy-diethylaminobenzene and 2,5-dihydroxy-(b -diethylaminoethyl) aminobenzene. Examples employing the hydrobromides of the above compounds together with the sodium salt of a sulphated C12-C14 fatty alcohol condensed with 2 mols ethylene oxide and sodium hydroxide in aqueous solution at pH7 are given, oxidation being effected by the air.
