Abstract
A shampoo composition comprises (a) a compound of formula <FORM:0921122/III/1> wherein R is a C9-13-alkyl group, R0 is a C2-4-alkylene group, R1 is C12H25 or C13H27, n is 2-6, and M is an alkali metal, triethanolammonium, or a mixture of an alkali metal or triethanolammonium with hydrogen, and (b) a water soluble non-ionic surface active agent selected from (i) a condensate of a C9-18-fatty acid monoester of an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol having at least 3 hydroxyl groups with at least 10, and preferably at least 20, molar proportions of ethylene oxide, or (ii) a condensate of a C9-18-fatty alcohol, -fatty acid, or -fatty mercaptan with at least 2/3 as many molar proportions of ethylene oxide as the hydrophobic base has carbon atoms, and preferably with at least 30 molar proportions of ethylene oxide, or (iii) a condensate of a C12-24-alkyl-phenol or -cyclohexanol with at least as many molar proportions of ethylene oxide as the hydrophobic base has carbon atoms, and preferably with at least 30 molar proportions of ethylene oxide. It is preferred that (a) be compounds in which R is C11H23, R0 is C2H4, and M is sodium, that when R1 is C12H25, n is 4 and that when R1 is C13H27, n is 3. (b)(i) is suitably the reaction product of 1 mole of sorbitan monolaurate with at least 20 moles ethylene oxide; (b)(ii) is suitably the reaction product of 1 mole of lauryl alcohol, lauric acid or t.-dodecyl mercaptan with at least 30 moles ethylene oxide; and (b)(iii) is suitably the reaction product of 1 mole of nonylphenol with at least 30 moles ethylene oxide. Sodium chloride (formed by neutralization) and the compound of formula <FORM:0921122/III/2> may also be present.ALSO:Compounds of the formula RCONHR0N(CH2CH2OH)(CH2COONa) where R is alkyl of 9-13 carbon atoms, and R0 is alkylene of 2-4 carbon atoms, are prepared in aqueous solution by reacting sodium chloracetate with the N-acyl, N1-(2-hydroxyethyl)alkylene diamine.
