Abstract

951,228. Packaging materials in bags. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 10, 1962 [Sept. 26, 1961], No. 34434/61. Drawings to Specification. Headings B8C and B8K. Air is allowed to escape from a filled plastics bag by an interrupted seal which is subsequently supplemented by a continuous seal. The interrupted seal may be made after the bag is filled and before it is flattened, or may be made before the bag is filled, filling being effected through another opening, for example through a valve. The continuous seal may coincide with the interrupted seal, or may lie nearer the opening of the bag, or where the material permits, may lie further within the bag. More than one interrupted seal may be provided-e.g. two parallel seals with staggered interruptions. The illustration to the Provisional Specification shows a flat rectangular bag with the interrupted seam formed across the full width of the bag adjacent and parallel to one edge. The outer portions of the weld may, however, be continuous. The interrupted seal may be formed by using a heated castellated blade pressing the material on to a rubber roller provided with a non-stick surface. Alternatively the head of a highfrequency welding machine may be castellated, or the interrupted seal may be formed with the aid of a comb of non-stick material. The seal may be effected by an adhesive. The bag may be filled, flattened and sealed while the filling material is at a raised temperature, and the bags may be stacked on pallets while still warm. The contents may be a granulated organic polymer, grain or feeding stuffs. The bags may be flattened by the device described in Specification 841,644.
