951,178. Head boxes for paper-making machines. SANDY HILL IRON & BRASS WORKS. Sept. 5,1962, No. 33945/62. Heading ,D2A. [Also in Division G3] A headbox for a paper-making machine for use under pressure or vacuum conditions comprises a closed box having walls 2,8,10 provided with a stock inlet at the bottom (not shown) and an adjustable stock outlet (not shown). The upper portion of the box is provided with an air inlet 40 and an air outlet 50 having a diaphragm operated valve 52. A vacuum pump 90 has its inlet connected to a pipe 80, open to atmosphere, and to the outlet pipe 50 by a pipe 70 while the pump outlet is connected to the inlet pipe 40 and to a pipe 100 open to the atmosphere. Valves 42, 56, 74, 82,104,114 are arranged in the pipes as shown such that with the valves 42, 74, 104 closed and the valves 56, 82,114 open the pump delivers air to the box and the pipe 50 is open to atmosphere, the box operates under pressure. With the valves 42, 74,104 open and valves 56,82,114 closed, the pump sucks air from the box through pipes 50,70 and pipe 40 is open to atmosphere, the box operates under vacuum. The stock level which alters with a change of air pressure is removed by a controller 60. The controller provides a signal to the valve 52 to adjust the air pressure in the box to maintain a predetermined optimum head and a constant spouting velocity.
