Abstract

951,007. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. BORG-WARMER CORPORATION. Feb. 8, 1962, No. 4959/62. Heading G3P. A pressure relief valve comprises a valve body 17 mounted in a housing 10 which has an inlet 11 and an outlet 12. The body 17 has a valve seat 25 for a relief valve closure 26, located outside the body, and formed with or fixed to a domedshaped skirt 31. The valve member is connected by a rod 27 to a piston 35 slidable in the body 17 and bores 37, 38 extend through the valve member rod and piston assembly. The bore 38 telescopically receives a hollow tubular member 39, fixed to the body 17 and formed with a valve seat 45 for a pilot valve closure 46, the member 46 being loaded by a spring 73 and controlling flow of fluid from the inlet 11 through the bores to a chamber 77. The piston 35 is loaded by a spring 79 towards the relief valve closed position and either side of the piston is vented through ports 80, 83. When the inlet pressure opens the pilot valve 46, fluid flows to chamber 77 and acts on piston 35 to open the relief valve. The skirt 31 allows only a small flow from the inlet to ports 17a when the relief valve cracks open and consequently a large stroke of the valve is necessary to relieve pressure thus preventing chattering. Movement of the relief valve does not vary the loading of the pilot valve which is thus substantially constant. The skirt 31 may be formed by a series of frusto-conical surfaces.
