Abstract
The invention comprises b -(b -N, N-diethylaminoethoxy)ethyl b , b -diphenyl -a - methylpropionate and its acid addition salts, their preparation by reacting b -(b -N, N-diethylaminoethoxy) ethanol with a b - b -diphenyl -a -methylpropionyl halide, optionally followed by salt formation, and pharmaceutical preparations containing one or more compounds of the invention and a carrier. b , b -Diphenyl -a - methylpropionic acid is prepared by reacting a -methylcinnamic acid with benzene in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride, and is converted to the acid chloride by means of thionyl chloride. The compounds of the invention are antitussive agents and may be administered orally in the form of pharmaceutical preparations (e.g. tablets or capsules).
