Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0950662/C2/1> (wherein R1 is a C1-4 alkyl group and R11 is a C3-6 alkyl group) and acid addition salts thereof, and their preparation by reacting an ester of the formula: <FORM:0950662/C2/2> (wherein X is a C1-4 alkyl group) with an N-substituted 2-ethylaminoethanol of the formula: <FORM:0950662/C2/3> in the presence of a catalyst, optionally followed by salt formation. The compounds of the invention have anti-tussive activity. 2-n-Propylaminoethanol is prepared by reacting ethylene chlorohydrin with an excess of propylamine, and is characterized as the picrate; it is treated with acetic anhydride to yield 2-(n-propylacetylamino) ethyl acetate and the latter is reduced with lithium aluminium hydride to 2-(n-propylethylamino) ethanol, characterized as the picrate and benzoate hydrochloride. The following substituted aminoethanols are prepared by standard methods: 2-isopropylaminoethanol, 2-isopropylethylaminoethanol, 2-n-butylethylaminoethanol, 2-s-butylaminoethanol, 2-s-butylethylaminoethanol (characterized as the picrate), 2-isobutylaminoethanol, 2-isobutylethylaminoethanol and 2-n-pentylethylaminoethanol (characterized as the acetate methiodide).
