Abstract

3-keto -D 4- androstene and 3-keto -D 4- pregnene compounds are obtained by reacting a 3b -hydroxy-5a , 6b -dichloroandrostane or a 3b -hydroxy-5a , 6b -dichloropregnane with at least 1% by weight of lithium chloride, based on the weight of steroid substrate used, in a solvent of the group consisting of dimethylformamide, diethylformamide, or dimethylacetamide at a temperature of at least 50 DEG C. The 3b -hydroxy -5a , 6b -dichloro androstane or pregnane starting compounds are obtained by treating with chlorine a 3b -hydroxy -D 5- androstene or pregnene to obtain the corresponding 5a , 6b -dichloro compound and hydrolysing the acylate group to form the 3b -hydroxy compound.
