Abstract

950,340. Valve-and-siphon-discharge waterwaste-preventers; ventilating closets. SHIRES & CO. (LONDON) Ltd. Sept. 17, 1962 [Sept. 20, 1961], No. 33639/61. Heading E1C. A pressure operated flushing cistern 5 comprises a pressure vessel 6 which is normally closed to atmosphere having an inlet 10 for connection to a supply of pressure liquid and an outlet 12 therefrom controlled by a valve 13 so that liquid entering the vessel 6 compresses air therein and is dischargeable therefrom under pressure on opening the valve 13, at least a major part of the air compressed by the liquid entering the vessel 6 being permanently retained within a resilient closed container within the vessel 6. The container is preferably a collapsible bladder 15 of e.g. rubber. There may be more than one vessel 6 connected through the valve 13 to a common outlet to the pan 4 at 14. A non-return inlet valve 11 may control the liquid entering the or each vessel 6, or several vessels 6 may have a single inlet valve 11 in a manifold 9 from which branch connections lead to each vessel 6. The outlet valve 13 may be connected to the manifold 9 which is entered by the liquid through a restricted throat whereby a Venturi effect is erected for exhausting the or each vessel 6 of liquid when discharging. Operation is by means of an electrical circuit controlled by a pedal 16, the outlet valve being solenoid-operated. In a modification an air inlet valve in the or each vessel 6 is operable during liquid discharge to ensure that all the liquid is discharged and there is an air outlet in the or each vessel 6 so that the air trapped therein can be reduced during filling, when the air expelled through the outlet may aspirate air from near a water closet pan 4 with which the cistern co-operates or to be fed back to the pan 4 after passing over or through an odour repellant. The or each vessel 6 may have an inverted U-tube, one leg of which is connected to the vessel outlet, the other leg being open to the liquid within the vessel 6, so that liquid discharge therefrom is also syphonic. The outlet valve 13 may be solenoid-operated so that its opening is initiated by a control-switch and it is closed automatically after a period of discharging the or each vessel 6. The valves 13 and air-inlet and -outlet valves may be all solenoid-operated, their operation in sequence during the discharge and filling cycles of the or each vessel 6 being under the control of timing means operated by a push-button switch and not a pedal.
