Abstract
A polymeric material, particularly an ionexchange material, is made by contacting a fluoropolymer containing units of the formula: <FORM:0950269/C3/1> in which Z represents a halogen or hydrogen atom with ethylenically unsaturated monomeric material in liquid phase for a sufficient temperature and time (in the absence of radiation and free-radical catalysts) to cause the monomeric material to be imbibed within and polymerize throughout the fluoropolymer. Fluoropolymers specified are polytetrafluoroethylene, polychlorotrifluoroethylen and a vinylidene fluoridechlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer, which may be in the form of a film, powder, aqueous emulsion or emulsion coagulate. Monomers specified are styrene and substituted styrenes, allyl amines, vinyl heterocyclic amines, ethylenic sulphonic acids, and ethylenic carboxylic acids and their salts, esters, amides, nitriles and anhydrides. If the resulting material does not contain ion-exchange groups, these may be introduced by appropriate treatment. The examples describe the following processes: (1) heating a film of polytetrafluoroethylene immersed in styrene and treating the resulting product with chlorosulphonic acid; and (2) heating powdered polychlorotrifluoroethylene in 2-vinyl pyridine, and pressing the resulting product into the form of a film.
