Abstract

<PICT:0898709/IV (a)/1> Graft copolymers are obtained by ozonizing a polymer and then contacting it with the vapour of a monomer polymerizable by a free-radical mechanism, while maintaining the monomer vapour free from polymerization inhibitors, including air, whereby the monomer graft polymerizes on to the polymer. Polymers specified are polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, natural rubber and cotton. Monomers specified are acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, vinylidene chloride and vinyl acetate. The polymer may be used in the form of a film, filament, a moulded body or particles. Polymerization may be accelerated by heat or the use of reducing agents, e.g. dimethylaniline or oxalic acid, which may be added either to the polymer or to the monomer. When the starting polymer is continuous in form the reaction may be performed in an apparatus as shown in Fig. 2, wherein a polymer film 33 enters reactor tank 30 through inlet 31 by way of a liquid seal 34 and is passed by means of rollers through the reactor tank in contact with the vapour 36 of the monomer 37 and then leaves the reactor by way of an outlet and sealing arrangement similar to that provided on the inlet side. The examples describe the grafting of (1) acrylonitrile on to polyethylene film, (2) vinylidene chloride on to polyethylene film, (3) acrylonitrile on to a film of polyvinyl chloride plasticized with a nitrile rubber, (4) acrylonitrile on to a pipe made from rigid polyvinyl chloride, (5) vinylidene chloride on to a cotton fabric, (6) vinyl acetate on to a ring of natural rubber, the resulting article being treated with sodium hydroxide, (7) vinylidene chloride on to pulverulent polyethylene, (8) acrylonitrile on to polyvinyl chloride, and (9) acrylic acid on to a filament made from high density polyethylene. Specification 898,710 is referred to.
