Abstract

One or more monomers of formula <FORM:0830947/IV (a)/1> where R is hydrogen, chlorine or a methylradical and R1 is hydrogen, chlorine, lower alkyl, alkoxy and cyclohexyl radicals, and n is 0, 1 or 2 are polymerized at 85 DEG to 120 DEG C. until a mixture containing not more than 70% polymer is obtained, the mixture passed through a devolatilizer-extruder at 110-225 DEG C. and an absolute pressure of not more than 200 mm. mercury, in less than 5 minutes, the unreacted monomer being removed and the polymer simultaneously extruded to give a residual polymer of greater than 98% polymeric material. Among specified monomers are styrene, methyl styrene, methoxystyrene, cyclohexylstyrene and alpha-methylstyrene. A prebodying stage may convert the monomer to 45% polymer and then a thermoscrew stage bring it up to the not exceeding 70% stage. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
