Abstract

Artificial teeth and dentures are made from methyl methacrylate polymers by a process which involves dispersing in an aqueous medium, e.g. an aqueous starch solution, methyl methacrylate and from 1 to 10 per cent by weight thereof one or more of the monomeric cross-linking agents p-divinyl benzene, diallyl phthalate and diallyl maleate to form liquid monomeric globules which are heated to form solid particles of partially polymerized solvent soluble copolymers, and thereafter immersing them in a liquid monomer, which is selected from the monomeric starting materials, in a weight ratio of between 1 : 1 and 1 : 4 to form a dough-like mass which is then hot-moulded into artificial teeth and dentures, whereby polymerization is completed. If desired the partial polymerization step may be accelerated by a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide.
